The next morning we woke up to a stout wind bumping us off the dock. We made a breakfast of porridge while mom took her 14th walk of the morning. In her extensive rambling of the pier she met Miner Dave who collects gold on the beaches and no longer teaches people how to pan for gold since they started stealing his payload.
She also met a lady named Phyllis who happened to live in Juneau and knows a dear friend of mine that used to live there - small town/state capital.
The water was rough and we really put Dramamine to the test for some of our new crew. But they all met the four foot seas and blasting wind with good humor, laughing as they rolled around on the floor trying to get up and down the ladder.
We pulled in to Holkham Bay planning on making a slack tide in Endicott Arm to get through some tidal rapids. Our plans were temporarily haulted when we happened upon two orcas!!!! And two humpbacks in the bay! We idled the boat around watching the giant fins rise and sink serenely for an hour. Finally, we had our first orca viewing and we were so thrilled we didn't care about missing the tide. Instead, we anchored in Tracy Arm Cove and explored the nearby icebergs with the Wildcat.
