Cape Caution and Joe's Bay

The anchorage was beautiful but full of current and we awoke the next morning much closer to a nearby island than we were comfortable with. We left early, eager to use the tides to buoy us along. Leaving the mouth of the channel to enter the Strait was a bit harrowing. Large swells built up in the mouth of the little channel. We dodged logs, were swirled about by turbulent currents and pitched up and down as if we were riding at the rodeo! Out into the strait the water was more manageable and the large swells were even and predictable, but for a while we felt just how small our boat is compared to these waters. We rounded Cape Caution with little incident, the skies were gray and the swells were several feet tall, but the winds weren't bad and we felt it was all as good as we could have hoped for. Our travels seemed unending today, either because we were fighting the weather or because we were farther from the shoreline with less to hold our interest. We made it to our anchorage in Joe's Bay just as the rains started. It was a snug little spot and rained on us unapologetically the rest of the evening. Alden made Shepherds pie for dinner and we baked fresh bread from dough I'd made earlier. After dinner we took the wildcat out in the rain to explore the rapids. Foam had been floating around the boat in large chunks and we found more and more as we approached the wide waterfall. The water was dark and churning and a great big pile of foam had built up at the base. Alden heaped a pile on his head, but later proclaimed that it smelled bad. This puts us two weeks into our trip!
